Liposuction: Sculpt Your Body

Objective: To remove localized fat deposits

Treatment time: 1 to 4 hours

Recovery: Immediate

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that has become one of the most popular in plastic surgery.

It is not a weight loss solution, but a powerful tool for removing localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Imagine being able to slim down those stubborn areas that never seem to go away, even with all your efforts.

Liposuction allows you to sculpt and refine your silhouette, revealing your natural curves and giving you a more harmonious contour.

The Advantages of Liposuction

Liposuction offers a number of benefits that focus on improving the shape and proportion of the body:

It effectively treats fat deposits that persist despite diet and exercise, in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back or jowls.

It sculpts and defines the contours of the body, resulting in a more elegant and proportional silhouette.

Once removed, the fat cells do not grow back in the treated areas (although the remaining cells may increase in size if there is weight gain).

It can be performed on various areas of the body where unwanted fat has accumulated.

The incisions are small, resulting in minimal scarring.

How do you know if liposuction is for you?

If you are considering liposuction, think about the following questions:

01. Do you have persistent fat deposits in specific areas of the body that don’t respond to diet and exercise?

02. Are you at a stable weight and close to your ideal weight?

03. Do you have good skin elasticity? (The skin must be able to contract after fat removal to avoid sagging).

04. Are you looking for an improvement in body contour, rather than a generalized weight loss solution?

05. Do you feel frustrated with certain areas of your body that seem disproportionate?

If the answer to these questions is “yes”, it’s very likely that you could benefit greatly from liposuction.

Take the first step towards feeling better, with a plan designed for you and natural, long-lasting results.

What to Expect from Treatment

It varies from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the extent of the areas to be treated and the amount of fat to be removed.

Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation (for smaller areas) or general anesthesia (for larger or multiple areas). The choice will depend on the extent of the procedure and the preference of the surgeon and the patient.

The incisions are very small (just a few millimeters), strategically located in natural skin folds or less visible areas. Through these small incisions, a thin tube (cannula) is inserted to aspirate the fat.

After infiltrating a tumescent solution (which helps to anaesthetize the area, constrict the blood vessels and make it easier to remove the fat), the cannula is moved back and forth through the fat deposits, loosening them so that they can be suctioned out.

    • Immediate post-operative period: It is normal to experience pain, swelling, bruising and numbness in the treated areas. Discomfort is usually well controlled with medication.
    • Drainage: There may be some leakage of fluid from the incisions in the first few days, which is normal.
    • Compression girdle: It is essential to wear a compression girdle on the treated areas for several weeks. This girdle helps reduce swelling, promotes skin retraction and improves the final contour.
    • Activities: Light walking is encouraged on the first day. Most daily activities can be resumed in a few days to a week. More strenuous activities, such as intense physical exercise, should be avoided for 3 to 6 weeks.
    • Massages: Manual lymphatic drainage or other massages may be recommended to help reduce swelling and speed up recovery.

Significant swelling subsides in the first few weeks, but it can take several months to disappear completely. The final result begins to be visible after a few weeks, but can take 3 to 6 months to consolidate.

The final result of liposuction is usually achieved after 3 to 6 months, when most of the swelling has disappeared and the skin has adapted to the new contour. The scars are small and tend to become almost unnoticeable over time.

The results of liposuction are long-lasting, as the fat cells are permanently removed from the treated areas.

However, it is crucial to maintain a stable weight, as significant weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells in the treated areas, or in other untreated areas, to increase in size.

    • Smoking: Smoking patients should quit at least 4 to 6 weeks before surgery and during recovery, as smoking compromises healing and increases the risk of complications.
    • Medication: Tell your surgeon about all the medicines, supplements and herbs you are taking, especially those that affect blood clotting.
    • Skin elasticity: Patients with poor skin elasticity may not be the best candidates for liposuction alone, as they may develop sagging after the fat has been removed. In these cases, skin removal surgery may be necessary.
  • Ideal weight: Liposuction is most effective for patients who are close to their ideal weight and are looking to eliminate stubborn fat deposits, rather than as a weight loss method.

Frequently Asked Questions

All the answers are carefully explained so that you always feel confident.

  • Liposuction: This is the general term for the removal of fat using suction.
  • Liposculpture: This is a concept that describes liposuction with a greater focus on shaping and contouring the body. Often, the fat removed is used to enhance other areas (liposuction), such as the buttocks or breasts, in the same procedure.

Liposuction is often combined with other plastic surgeries to optimize the results and achieve a more complete and harmonious body transformation, taking advantage of the same surgical and recovery time. Some examples include:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck): This is one of the most common combinations. Liposuction can be used to refine the flanks and waist, while abdominoplasty removes excess skin and muscle from the abdominal region.
  • Mammoplasty (Augmentation, Reduction or Mastopexy): Take the opportunity to improve your silhouette while also fulfilling your dreams of breast aesthetics.
  • Gluteoplasty (Buttock Augmentation with Lipograft): Fat removed by liposuction from other areas can be purified and injected into the buttocks to increase volume and improve shape (buttock lipograft or Brazilian Butt Lift – BBL).
  • Facelift or Necklift: In cases of liposuction of the jowls or neck, it can be combined with a facelift for a more complete facial rejuvenation.
  • Brachioplasty (Arm Lift): Liposuction can be used in conjunction with brachioplasty to remove fat and excess skin on the arms.
